Tax Collector to relocate office

TAMPA, Fla. – (Feb. 5, 2004) – Citing a need to accommodate the growth in northwest Hillsborough County, Tax Collector Doug Belden announced today the agency will expand and relocate its Hillsborough Avenue office to a site near the Veteran’s Expressway.

The current office, located in the Horizon Park Shopping Center at Hillsborough and Dale Mabry Highway, will move to the Waters Crossing Shopping Center at the Veteran’s Expressway and Waters Avenue by early summer, Belden said.

The Waters Crossing location now houses a Lowe’s and a Target Superstore, and the prominent retailers, along with the location, should make the new site more accessible and easier to find, Belden said.

The new office will be considerably larger – 10,000 square feet compared to the current 6,000 square feet – and will offer all Tax Collector services, including driver’s license and motor vehicle renewal, title work and tax and license payments. There will also be twice as much parking, Belden said.

“The bottom line is that it’s a larger space in a newer building with more parking and more visibility,” Belden said. “It’s a good deal for us and a great deal for the taxpayers.”

Construction should start on the new facility later this month and take 60 to 90 days, Belden said. When the new office is ready for occupancy, the Horizon Park space will close permanently and the office will move to the Waters Crossing location.

Belden said statistics from the Hillsborough County City-County Planning Commission showed the northwest area, including Citrus Park, had experienced tremendous growth in the past decade. The Horizon Park office, which opened in 1985, simply could not accommodate the growing number of customers, Belden said.

“On our busiest days that branch was just packed,” Belden added. “It wasn’t good for our customers and it wasn’t much better for our employees.”

The Waters Crossing office is the latest part in larger plan to renovate and modernize Tax Collector offices countywide, Belden said. The agency has already renovated offices in North Tampa, Plant City, Ruskin and Brandon.
