Driver License

About Real ID

The federal REAL ID Act of 2005 set new standards for the issuance of state-issued driver licenses and identification cards. REAL ID was developed by the Department of Homeland Security in response to the 9/11 Commission recommendation that the U.S. improve its system for issuing identification documents.

The goal of REAL ID is to improve the integrity and security of state-issued driver licenses and identification cards in order to help fight terrorism and reduce fraud.
As a result, there are new identification requirements for obtaining a REAL ID compliant driver license or identification card.

Are you REAL ID Compliant?

REAL ID’s have a star in the upper right corner.
After 2014, federal agencies will begin to phase in enforcement of REAL ID compliant driver licenses and ID cards.  The Department of Homeland Security expects to require a REAL ID to board commercial flights or enter federal facilities no sooner than 2016.

Your current Florida license or ID card will continue to be valid as identification for federal purposes until:

  • December 1, 2014 for individuals born AFTER December 1, 1964.
  • December 1, 2017 for individuals born BEFORE December 1, 1964.
