Beginning January 1, 2010, Florida has new documentation requirements for residents renewing or obtaining a new driver license or identification card. For office visits, you must bring original birth certificate , valid passport or current Identification card that proves your identity, social security number and residential address.
You must visit an office for these transactions with the following required documents:
- If you are applying for your first driver license or identification card
- If you have changed your name since your last renewal (eg: by marriage or divorce)
- When your current credential expires and you have already used the one-time “convenience” renewal option
If none of these apply then you can renew your license online, or by mail. Please come prepared to present one of the approved identification documents as proof of citizenship or legal presence.

Check for the star
Beginning October 1, 2020, every air traveler 18 years of age and older will need a REAL ID compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of ID to fly within the United States. Check if your Florida driver license is REAL ID complaint by checking for the gold star in the upper right corner of your license. If you are not sure, contact us to find out.
If you are not yet REAL ID compliant, you will need to bring documents that prove your identity to update your license. Click here to find out what all you will need to bring.
