Transfer a Registration
To transfer registration to a vehicle you have been issued a Florida title for, you must bring:
- Proof of Florida property damage and PIP insurance to purchase a license plate. Company name, Insurance identification code and policy number is required.
- If transferring a license plate or decal, submit the previous registration or license plate and decal number.

What if a license plate is being transferred from a vehicle I still own?
An affidavit must be submitted by the owner stating the vehicle is not operational, is in storage, or will not be operated on the streets and highways of this state

Do I need proof of Florida insurance when transferring a plate?
Proof of motor vehicle insurance is not required when transferring a license plate, unless the registration period is being extended.

Who can transfer a plate if more than one name is on the registration?
When a license plate is issued in names joined by “and” or “or”, the license plate may be transferred to either individual’s name or to one of the previous owners in joint ownership with a new owner.

Either in the DMV manual under RS-05 or Section 320.0609 of the Florida Statutes which authorizes the transfer and exchange of license plates and the collection of or exemption from a transfer fee when a replacement vehicle is registered in the same owner’s name, in the name of at least one of the previous owners of the license plate, or in the surviving spouse’s name.
